Ocean Eddies in the Drake Passage: Decoding Their Three-Dimensional Structure and Evolution

چکیده
The Drake Passage is known for its abundant mesoscale eddies, but little about their three-dimensional characteristics, which hinders our understanding of impact on eddy-induced transport and deep-sea circulation. A 10-year study was conducted using GLORYS12 Mercator Ocean reanalysis data from 2009 to 2018. analyzed the statistical characteristics eddies in Passage, spanning surface down a depth 2000 m three dimensions. findings indicate that mean radius 35.5 km, with lifespan 12.3 weeks vorticity 2.2 × 10−5 s−1. are most active energetic near main fronts propagate north-eastward at an average distance 97.8 km. eddy parameters vary water depth, more anticyclones detected 400 m, displaying larger longer propagation distance. Cyclones have lifespans greater vorticity. However, beyond there not much difference between cyclones. Approximately 23.3% reach tending penetrate deeper. come different shapes, bowl-shaped (52.7%), lens-shaped (27.1%) cone-shaped (20.2%). They exhibit annual monthly distribution patterns. Due high latitude location, has strong rotation weak stratification, resulting generation small deep-reaching eddies. These contribute formation Antarctic intermediate lead modulation turbulent dissipation.

Seasonal to interannual upper-ocean variability in the Drake Passage
Year-round monitoring of the upper-ocean temperature variability in Drake Passage has been undertakensince September 1996 through repeat expendablebathythermograph(XBT) surveys. The closely spaced measurements (6–15 km apart) provide the rst multi-year time series for examining seasonal to interannual variability in this Southern Ocean choke point. While the temperature sections reveal the se...

[1] Mixed-layer depth (MLD) is often used in a mixed-layer heat budget to relate air-sea exchange to changes in the near-surface ocean temperature. In this study, reanalysis heat flux products and profiles from a 15 year time series of high-resolution, near-repeat expendable bathythermograph/expendable conductivity-temperature-depth (XBT/XCTD) sampling in Drake Passage are used to examine the n...

[1] A 16 year record of expendable bathythermograph transects across Drake Passage is used to examine variability in upper-ocean heat content that is not associated with the annual cycle. Links between upper-ocean heat content and anomalous heat fluxes, winds, two large-scale climate indices, and mesoscale eddies and meanders are examined. Results suggest that interannual variations in surface ...

[1] Mesoscale eddies dominate oceanic kinetic energy at sub-inertial frequencies. Their three-dimensional structure has, however, remained obscure, hindering better understanding of eddy dynamics. Here by applying the composite analysis of satellite altimetry and Argo float data to the globe, we show that despite remarkable regional differences in amplitude, extent and polarity, etc., mesoscale...
